CUSTOMER SERVICE CONSULTANT: NICE TO MEET YOU
Human Trafficking, a subject no one wants to talk about. I get it, it is uncomfortable. But it is happening, and we must start discussing it. The definition of human trafficking is the illegal trade of people through coercion, force, or deception for exploitation. Human trafficking is a violation of human rights.
IS IT THAT BIG OF A DEAL?
This Customer Service Consultant wondered the same thing. So, I started searching for answers. Did you know that it is a global issue? It affects millions worldwide, and it is big business. Human Trafficking generates billions of dollars in profit, only second to drug trafficking.
WHERE AM I GETTING THIS INFORMATION?
I know what you are thinking. How does this Customer Service Consultant know these things? This is not her specialty.
Well, let me introduce you to Karen Gregory, RN. Karen focuses on Safety Measures in and out of the dental field. However, her passion is alerting people about Human Trafficking. She is on a mission to bring awareness to this horrible trade and calls it her “Passion Project.” Here it yourself, in her own words.
HIGHLIGHTS FROM THIS INTERVIEW
1) How it Happens
The days of the white van with dark-out windows are not typically how predators get their victims. They are now recruiting, coercing, and abusing power. They often pose as recruiters offering jobs, education, or travel opportunities. Victims may initially agree to travel willingly, only to find themselves in exploitative or abusive conditions they cannot escape. Some do not even realize they are participating in human trafficking.
2) Who is at Risk?
Victims can be of any age, gender, or nationality. However, the young ones in middle and high school are easy targets. The online environment is a big place where our youth are “marks.” If you are in healthcare, whether that is medical or dental, you could be dealing with someone who is involved, and you would not even know it. This is why we must learn how to recognize it.
3) What Can You Do?
As uncomfortable as it is to talk about it, we must. You do not know what you do not know, and the only way you will learn is to speak to those who can educate you on what to look for and how to help.
The biggest problem this Customer Service Consultant learned about is that, because it is so hush-hush, no one knows what to look for. Do not be fooled, this can happen to any of our families, friends, or loved ones. Get informed and, as Karen says, “Listen to your heart.”
